ANNOUNCEMENTS Thursday, February 4, 2010
Parent/Teacher Conference on Thursday, Feb. 4th 4:30-7:30 pm

Feb. 15th - No School-President’s Day

Congrats to the TeamQuest 12th and 11th grade team members - they placed 4th and will advance to the Regional Competition later in February: Leslie Bridges, Abby Bateman, Mason Tippy and Neal Coelho.

The Massac County High School Project Graduation will be hosting a chili supper in the high school cafeteria on Friday, February 5, from 5:30 - 7:30, prior to the Murphysboro/Massac basketball game. The meal includes chili, hot dog, dessert, and drink. The cost is $5.00 per person. Project Graduation is a drug and alcohol-free annual celebration for our new graduates.

Students who qualify to take Honors English 11 and AP English are posted outside of Ms. Morris' room A79.

MHS Chorus will be selling Singing Valentines for $2 or 3/$5 during all lunch periods from Feb. 3-11. Make this a one-of-a-kind Valentine's Day by sending a singing telegram to that special someone! (2/3-2/11)

Monday, February 15, 2010 is MURPHYSBORO NIGHT at John A Logan Community College. All Murphysboro residents will get FREE admission to the basketball games and will also receive a free popcorn and soda. Women's basketball game starts at 5:30 p.m. with mens following at 7:30 p.m. Former Red Devil Mark Imhoff, the current JALC Men's Basketball Head Coach, broke Tom Ashman's all time wins record this past Saturday. A special presentation will be made to Coach Imhoff during the men's game.

Attention junior girls: It is time to begin planning prom! There will be a prom committee meeting this Friday morning (2/5) at 8:00 in A22 and Tuesday (2/9) after school in the cafeteria. Please plan to attend and if you cannot, see Ms. Ward or Mrs. Trimble.

Student Council will be selling Crush Cans for $1.00 during all lunch periods from Feb. 4th -11th.

Now is the time to order your 2009-2010 Yearbook. Order forms and ordering information can be found in the front office or outside of Mr. Berry's room (Room B18). Not sure if you have ordered one, check the list posted outside of Mr. Berry's room it is updated weekly. Any questions please see Mr. Berry.

If you enjoy creative writing and would like to have a publishing contract, check out the inkpop.com link on the library page. inkpop is an on-line community that connects teens with talent-spotting readers and publishing professionals. inkpop members play a critical role in deciding who will land a publishing contract with HarperCollins.

There will be two different financial aid nights to help you fill out your FAFSA that are offered in the month of February. On Tuesday, February 16th at 7:00 p.m. in the MHS Auditorium and Sunday, February 28th at 1:00-3:30 p.m. at JALC. Every senior is strongly encouraged to fill out their FAFSA. Even if you are at this point only considering college or if you believe that you won't receive any money/resources that filling out the FAFSA provides. This government funding is given to the first who apply and after it runs out you will not receive any! You and your parent should bring their and your 2009 tax information and any income information from 2009 to either meeting. Contact guidance with any questions.

The Illinois Elks is having a Free Children’s Diagnostic Orthopedic Clinic. You may call 1-800-272-0074 to get more info or to confirm clinic date and set up an appointment. Clinic dates and location are: Feb. 26th, May 21st, August 27th & Nov. 19th @ 2:00-4:00 pm @ Heartland Regional Medical Center, Marion.

Students: All fee's and holds must be paid and books returned before you will be allowed to attend Prom and field trips.

Juniors need to register for their senior year- The Guidance Department has set the class meeting on Wednesday, February 3rd at 9:30 in the auditorium. Juniors will be called over the intercom.

Beta members—there will be a meeting after school today, Feb. 3rd, to make Valentine’s Day cards. Bring any supplies you have. Also if you are attending convention, notify Ms. Goode.

MHS Boy’s Baseball conditioning for baseball is at GJAL from 4:00-5:30 pm on: Feb. 3, 5, 8, 9, 12, 17, 19, 22 & 24. On Feb. 15th conditioning is @ 10:00-11:30 am. March 1st –tryouts begin. You must have a current physical, athletic acknowledgement sheet and proof of insurance on file before you can participate. These dates and times will also be posted in the Athletic Department.

Raffle - Cinnamon Lane has donated a gift certificate for flowers for Prom to be raffled off--all proceeds to go to the Kyle Miller Cancer Fund. Tickets will be for sale in Mrs. Elwell's room before and after school, and at the home basketball game on Friday night. See Mrs. Elwell or Mrs. O'Leary for questions.

Bass Club- There will be a bass club meeting this Thursday after school in Mrs. O'Leary's room-please do not bring any fishing gear.

Envirothon--There will be an Envirothon meeting the Friday morning at 8:00 in Mrs. O'Leary's room. All team members need to attend.

The Consumer Education Proficiency Test will be given on Tuesday, Feb. 2nd, at 3:30 pm in Mr. Goot's room (A50). This test is open to all students in grades 9-12 who are not currently enrolled in a consumer education course & who did not take the test this past September. Students who receive a passing grade on this test will not have to take the Consumer Ed class during their senior year. Bass Club- There will be a bass club meeting this Thursday after school in Mrs. O'Leary's room-please do not bring any fishing gear.

Envirothon--There will be an Envirothon meeting the Friday morning at 8:00 in Mrs. O'Leary's room. All team members need to attend.

Raffle - Cinnamon Lane has donated a gift certificate for flowers for Prom to be raffled off--all proceeds to go to the Kyle Miller Cancer Fund. Congratulations to this year’s WYSE Team--Members: Nick Barger, Rachel Brady, Leslie Bridges, Josh Brown, Jasmine Buchannan, Sam Chapa, Neal Coelho, Jose Garcia, Karissa Grammer, Zach Hostetler, Audrey McConnell, Lena Reiff, Mason Tippy and Jacob White. Alternates: Dylan Preece, Vincent Parrone, Cory English and Tanner Oetjen.

Senior meeting- There is a valuable Career and College Readiness Program sponsored by JALC that we want to make the seniors aware of. The meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 22nd at 3:00 p.m. in the auditorium. We will call them down over the intercom.

MHS Boy’s Baseball conditioning for baseball is at GJAL from 4:00-5:30 pm on: Jan. 25, 27, 29, Feb. 1, 3, 5, 8, 9, 12 17, 19, 22 & 24. On Feb. 15th conditioning is @ 10:00-11:30 am. March 1st –tryouts begin. You must have a current physical, athletic acknowledgement sheet and proof of insurance on file before you can participate. These dates and times will also be posted in the Athletic Department.

Sophomores-please turn in Whiffleboy's Pizza Fundraiser Money & Unsold Cards to Miss Bryant or Miss Melvin by Friday, January 22nd.

Key Club Meeting Wednesday night at 8:00. All members who are planning to stay in the club 2nd Semester should attend. Students interested in joining should stop by the Key Club office backstage in the Auditorium Wednesday morning before school for further information.

There will be a newspaper meeting in Ms. Morris' room (A79) immediately after school on Wednesday.

Regional Office of Education, in cooperation with the Teachers’ Retirement System, is scheduling telephone conferences on Feb. 18th. If you would like to speak with a TRS benefits counselor, call the Regional Office to complete a request form. Forms must be returned to the Regional Office no later than Jan. 14th. Conferences will be scheduled February 18th, between 9:00 am - 5:45 pm in 15-minutes time periods. (See the office copy room bulletin board for the form).

Due to the weather, the RIF Training scheduled for Thursday, January 7th at the IEA office was cancelled. The training is rescheduled for Wednesday, January 28th at 5:00 p.m. If you signed up to attend on the 7th and are unable to attend on the 28th, please let Gretchen at the IEA office know.

The Regional Office of Education, in cooperation with the Teachers’ Retirement System, is scheduling telephone conferences in this area on Feb. 18th.
